Here's a short article I published a few months ago about GMO's, although I didn't discuss any Islamic views on it:
What do you think?
Also, 3 weeks ago I took part in a seminar on 'Bioethics and Islam' at the Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics in Doha, Qatar. I talked about the centrality of life in the universe and called for a new understanding of the principle of 'Preservation of Life'.
I also mentioned the very disturbing developments on synthetic life, e.g. this: http://www.extremetech.com/ext…..laying-god
What do you think?
In practice, when this technology can be advantage to end up the hunger. It may be the solution of problem of developing country. Even Though some speculation has rise up a controversy because of some invention. Ethical debate will bring attention form people to assess any risk the will be faced. i my opinion, it is normal.
Putting aside the underfunding of critical research into GM impacts on health and ecology, I would like to put two considerations into the ring that you might find interesting. The politics of it vis-acis- the corporation and the small farmer, and the rights violation.
Firstly, these seeds take the power and creativity away from the farmers, who make up a considerable population of Muslims and others. The situation facing Indian farmer, and their suicided begs us to temper techno optimism with humanity.
Secondly, there is south american theology called Mother Earth rights which accords rights to every living creature. Mother Earth Rights is enshrined inthe legal systems of Ecuador and Bolivia. One of its clauses is the rights of specias no to have their genetic integrity tampered with.
These political and ethical arguments inform my stance on the GMO issue. Technology with bad ethics and politics is harmful. There are plenty of technological pathways to food justice.
